2. The term (REF) refers to the measurements taken from the Government furnished
hub or die.
3. Star placement and finish:
a. The star for the first, second, third and fourth award for -1, -2, -3, -7, -8, and -9
shall be 3/16 inch (REF) in diameter, 1/16 inch + 1/64 inch - 0 inch in thickness, and be
made from not less than 85/15 rich-low brass. The finish for -1, -2, and -3 shall be copper
flashed (unless 95/5 gilding metal is used), oxidized, and relieved. The finish for -7, -8, and
-9 shall be dull flat black enamel.
b. The star for the fifth award for -1, -2, -3, -7, -8, and -9 shall be 5/16 inch (REF) in
diameter, 5/64 inch + 1/64 inch - 0 inch in thickness, and be made from not less than 85/15
rich-low brass. The finish for -1, -2, and -3 shall be gold plated, highly polished. The finish
for -7, -8, and -9 shall be dull flat black enamel.
c. The star for the first, second, third and fourth award for -4, -5, and -6 shall be 3/32
inch (REF) in diameter, 3/64 inch + 1/64 inch - 0 inch in thickness, and be made from not
less than 85/15 rich-low brass. The finish shall be copper flashed (unless 95/5 gilding
metal is used), oxidized, and relieved.
4. The star for the fifth award for -4, -5, and -6 shall be 3/16 inch (REF) in diameter,
1/16 inch + 1/64 inch - 0 inch in thickness, and be made from not less than 85/15 rich-low
brass. The finish shall be gold plated, highly polished.
5. Except for the 3/32 inch star, hubs used to make single or double stars in
accordance with MIL-DTL-41819/7 shall be used for the stars specified herein.
6. The attaching device for all star sizes shall be a staple type prong. The prong shall
be 1/8 inch + 1/16 inch - 0 inch long and shall be formed from 0.010 inch ± 0.002 inch thick
flat brass wire 0.040 inch ± 0.002 inch wide. The prong shall be centered on the back of
the star. The star shall be mounted on the badge by drilling as many 0.050 inch ± 0.005
inch diameter holes as stars to be mounted in the locations shown. The prongs shall be
pushed through the hole(s) so that the star is located in the correct position and the prongs
bent over to insure a tight, snug fit.
7. As an alternate method of attachment for -7, -8, and -9, unfinished star(s) may be
soldered to the unfinished insignia, and the entire piece finished in the required subdued
finish.
8. The dull, flat, black enamel for -7, -8, and -9 shall match FED-STD-595, Chip No.
37038.
