3.3 Materials. Materials shall be as specified herein. Verification shall be in
accordance with the standards and methods specified in 4.3.1, Table III.
3.3.1 Embroidery yarn.
3.3.1.1. Material identification. The embroidery yarn shall be a semi-dull continuous
filament, regenerated cellulose type rayon, 2-ply Schiffli type or Multihead yarn. The use of 2-
ply polyester is authorized in lieu of rayon. Denier of the yarn shall be as specified on the
cartoon or drawing. Comparable sizes are as follows:

3.3.1.2 Color. The color of embroidery yarns for the background (when applicable) and
device shall be as shown in TABLE I. The border stitching, when required, shall be as indicated
on the cartoon. The use of sulfur dyes is prohibited.
3.3.1.3 Color matching. The color shall match the specified color from the DOD Standard
Shades for Heraldic Yarns for Embroidery and Ribbons, 1993 Edition when viewed under
filtered tungsten lamps which approximate artificial daylight having a correlated color
temperature of 7000 ± 500 K, with illumination of 100 ± 20 foot candles. The color shall also be
a good match to the specified color under incandescent lamplight at 2300 ± 100 K.
3.3.1.4 Colorfastness. When tested, the dyed embroidered yarn shall show good fastness
to wet-dry cleaning, laundering, and light except the colorfastness for black, blue, and red
shades shall be not less than fair for laundering.
3.3.2 Bobbin yarn. The bobbin yarn shall be a continuous multi-filament nylon, 2-ply cotton,
or 2-ply spun polyester yarn. The yarn shall be undyed except that the yarn for Type I insignia
may be dyed black. When the bobbin yarn is dyed black, it shall show fair colorfastness to wet-
dry cleaning and laundering. The use of sulfur dyes is prohibited.
3.3.3 Stitching Thread. The thread for stitching the turned under edges of Type III, Styles 1
and 2 insignia shall be cotton thread conforming to Type I, 3 ply, Ticket No. 50 of A-A-52094.
The thread shall be dyed Khaki, conforming to HCS 67193 of DOD Standard Shades for
Heraldic Yarns for Embroidery and Ribbons, 1993 Edition (see 2.3), and shall show good
fastness to laundering and light.
3.3.4 Overedge stitching yarn and thread.
3.3.4.1 Material identification. The yarn and thread used for overedge stitching shall be 600
or 1200 denier multi-filament bright rayon or polyester for cover thread (see 3.5.3.1) and Type
III, 3-ply, Ticket No. 00, of A-A-52094 or Ticket No. 50, 2-ply of A-A-50199 for needle and looper
threads.
3.3.4.2 Color. The color of the yarn and the thread used for overedge stitching shall be as
specified for the embroidered border on the applicable drawing or cartoon. (See also Table I.)
The use of sulfur dyes is prohibited.
